Why Dry or Dehydrate Mushrooms?

Drying mushrooms is an effective way to preserve them for long-term storage and use. This method helps maintain the flavor of mushrooms within the texture and nutritional value of the mushrooms while reducing their size and weight, making them easier to transport and store.

Dried mushrooms are best addition to salads or garnish on top of different dishes. Dried mushrooms can also be reconstituted with water and used in various dishes or recipes. Additionally, drying mushrooms allows for a more concentrated flavor suitable for seasoning soups, sauces, stews, and other dishes.

Drying mushrooms is an easy and cost-effective way to preserve them since they last longer than fresh mushrooms when appropriately stored in an airtight bag or container.

How Do You Dry Mushrooms Without a Dehydrator?

As you see in today’s recipe, I am using a dehydrator for drying our mushrooms, but there are various options to dry your veggies even if you do not own this kitchen gadget. Pick your favorite or the one that suits you the best.

6 Ways To Dry Mushrooms

Drying mushrooms at home is a great way to preserve and store them for later use.

There are a few methods of drying mushrooms:

  1. Air dry – place your sliced mushrooms onto a newspaper or paper kitchen towel and allow them to air dry naturally in your pantry or a cool, dry place in your house.
  2. Oven dry – It is also a great idea to use an oven on the lowest heat with a slightly open door. You can quickly dry your mushrooms that way.
  3. Dehydrate – using a dehydrator is the most efficient way, as the low temperature will prevent them from burning.
  4. Heater – mainly in the winter- where you can place your mushrooms onto a baking sheet covered with newspaper.
  5. Freeze dry – using a home freeze-drying appliance.
  6. Sundry – in the summer, where you spread your sliced mushrooms in a shaded area of your garden.

Are All Mushrooms Suitable For Drying?

No, not all mushrooms are suitable for drying. Mushrooms that contain a lot of moisture don’t dry well and become hard and brittle.

Boletus edulis, or porcini mushrooms, are the most common type of mushroom used for drying because they have low moisture content. For optimal results when drying mushrooms, look for thick stems and caps with no signs of bruising or discoloration – these are ideal for drying.

Difference Between The Oven Method And The Dehydrator

The difference between an oven or dehydrator is mainly in temperature. It is the same method: the slices are dried by flowing hot air.

With the dehydrator, you can go to a really low temperature, which most ovens do not allow.

For the same reason, if drying in the oven, you must be careful not to burn your slices.

The temperature inside the oven is usually more condensed, and air circulation is hotter.

For them to properly dry, you need to swap the trays from time to time. It is also great if your take the mushrooms out after about 3 to 4 hours, turn the slices and return the baking sheet with the mushrooms to the oven for another hour.

Another difference between dehydrator or oven is that it takes longer to dry using dehydrators, but the slices will never burn.

What Type of Mushrooms To Dry?

When it comes to drying mushrooms, certain types are better suited than others. Oysters, chanterelle, wild mushrooms, and shiitake mushrooms are the most popular choices for drying because they are highly flavorful and have a good texture when dried.

These mushrooms also contain high levels of nutrients and fiber, making them a great addition to any meal. Porcini mushrooms are ideal for drying due to their strong flavor and meaty texture. While all mushrooms can be dried successfully, these four varieties are especially suited for the process. When choosing what type of mushroom to dry, consider the flavors you want in your dish and how you plan on using it.

Why Use Dried Mushrooms Instead Of Fresh Ones?

Dried mushrooms are a great alternative to fresh mushrooms for many reasons. They are much easier to store and transport, as they do not need to be kept cool or refrigerated. Dried mushrooms also have a longer shelf life than fresh mushrooms, so you can buy them in bulk and store them for later use.

Additionally, dried mushrooms provide more concentrated flavors than their fresh counterparts. When cooked, they rehydrate quickly and easily without losing flavor or texture. They are less expensive than fresh mushrooms, making them an economical option for adding flavor to dishes without spending too much money.

How Do You Dry Mushrooms in An Oven?

Following the same step in our recipe, clean and slice your mushrooms. Put the mushrooms on a baking sheet with parchment paper and bake at the lowest temperature for 3 to 4 hours. Make sure you place mushrooms in a single layer.

Check regularly and swap the trays to avoid burning the slices. Turn the mushrooms after about 3 hours and return them to the oven.

If your oven doesn’t go below 90 degrees celsius or 200 Fahrenheit, keep the lowest temperature oven and leave the door slightly open. The best thing is to place a thick wooden spoon between the oven door. This allows air to circulate at a lower temperature.
