The Best Comfort Food

This recipe has become one of my absolute favorite comfort foods, along with cabbage soup, crockpot taco soup, and homemade sausages. When I make a big enough batch, it’s perfect for sharing with the whole family, like my feta cheese egg appetizers and cream cheese sausage ball. When I started making these gluten-free dumplings, my daughters couldn’t get enough – they always asked for more, and I can’t blame them!

The best part is how versatile they are. I especially love pairing them with creamy chicken soup. Thanks to this recipe, chicken and dumplings became a staple in our home, and I find myself making these dumplings again and again.

Gluten Free Flours

As you noticed in all my recipes, I try to use gluten-free flour instead of regular high-carb flour. This is part of my clean-eating approach, which involves using clean, wholesome ingredients.

My go-to options are mostly almond and coconut flour. Not only are they gluten-free, but they also add a great taste because they are made from natural ingredients. In this recipe, there is no need to reach out for any purpose flour, rice flour, baking powder, starch, tapioca, or even Xanthan gum.

Steaming Dough For Softer Dumplings

Steaming dumplings is one of the most exciting ways to cook, and I love how soft and fluffy they turn out on the outside while staying tender inside. I get excited every time I make this recipe, especially when I eat them hot! Though many people stick to baking, steaming is worth the effort—you won’t regret it.

How To Make Gluten Free Dumplings

Let’s hop into the details and take the complete steps to make the best dumplings you can imagine.

I have also prepared a full video with instructions for those who prefer more visual guidance.

Kitchen Gadgets:

  • Cooking Pot: Use any large pot available in your kitchen where you can fit a steaming stand inside.
  • Steaming Stand: For safe and effective steaming, use a steaming stand that fits perfectly in your cooking pot and is heat-resistant.
  • Hand Mixer: Instead of mixing the ingredients by hand, use a hand mixer to combine the dough easier and faster.
  • Parchment Paper: This is important for the steaming process to prevent the dumplings from sticking to each other while they cook.

Ingredients:

  • Eggs: Eggs are essential for making the dumpling dough stick together.
  • Almond Flour: Almond flour gives the dumplings a pleasant nutty taste and helps them stay fluffy.
  • Mozzarella: Use grated mozzarella cheese to add a creamy and cheesy flavor to the dumplings.
  • Almond Milk: Dairy-free almond milk adds moisture to the dumpling dough. You can make a homemade one by grinding soaked almonds and straining the milk.
  • Psyllium Husk: Helps the dough stick together with an additional fiber.
  • Coconut Oil: Oil softens the dumplings and adds a hint of coconut flavor.
  • Coconut Flour: In addition to almond flour, coconut flour adds a bit of sweetness and thickens the texture of the dough.

Second Step: Eggs

Start the base of the dough by whisking the eggs until they are slightly fluffy and smooth. Use a hand mixer for easy mixing.

Third Step: Mix All Ingredients

Once the eggs are mixed and smooth, add all the other ingredients and prepare to mix.

Combine all the ingredients using the hand mixer until a smooth dough forms. Be patient when mixing, as the psyllium husk takes a little time to combine with the dough.

After achieving your desired consistency, transfer to a bowl and let it rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Cover it with plastic wrap.

Fourth Step: Shape

After 30 minutes, remove the dough from the fridge and shape it into small balls. You can portion them first before shaping them to ensure equal dough dumplings.

Fifth Step: Cook the Dumplings

Add enough water to the pot and place the steaming stand inside, with oiled parchment paper on top.

Bring the pot of water to a boil, then carefully add the dumplings. Cover with a lid and steam on low heat for 15 minutes.

TRICKS AND TIPS FOR COOKING THE DUMPLINGS:

  • Use parchment paper: To prevent your dumplings from sticking while they cook, place them on a small piece of parchment paper or lightly grease the steamer basket.
  • Don’t overcrowd the steamer: Leave enough space between each dumpling so the steam can circulate and cook them evenly.
  • Use hot, simmering water: To ensure the dumplings cook through properly, always make sure the water is already boiling before you start steaming.
  • Steam with a lid: Keep the lid on throughout the steaming process to trap the steam inside, which ensures the dumplings cook faster and evenly.
  • Check for doneness: Steam the dumplings until they are puffed and firm to the touch, around 10-15 minutes, depending on the size. You can use a toothpick to check if the dough is cooked inside.
  • Add flavor to the water: For extra flavor, add herbs or spices, like ginger, thyme or garlic, to the water below your steamer to give the dumplings a subtle aromatic boost. You can even swap water with broth for an extra touch.
  • Avoid lifting the lid too soon: Try not to lift the lid during the first few minutes to prevent heat loss and ensure even cooking.
