Best Homemade Enchilada Sauce

Creating the best homemade enchilada sauce mix doesn’t have to be hard. Just with some basic ingredients and a little know-how, you can whip up a delicious sauce that will elevate your enchiladas to the next level.

When you make enchilada sauce from scratch, you can always adjust to just how you like it making something super tasty.

Enchilada Spice Mix vs Taco Seasoning

Enchilada spice mix is specifically designed to enhance the taste of enchiladas. The mix typically includes spices like chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, and sometimes Mexican oregano and paprika.

Taco seasoning, on the other hand, is a blend used to season ground meat or vegetables for making tacos. It often consists of chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and sometimes kosher salt and pepper. It provides a savory and slightly spicy flavor to the filling of tacos.

In simple terms, our easy enchilada seasoning is tailored for enchiladas, while taco seasoning is a more general blend suitable for seasoning taco fillings.

Both are blends that you can use all the time with a mix of spices you already have at home.

TRICKS AND TIPS TO MAKE ENCHILADA SEASONING RECIPE:

  • Fresh vs. Ground Spices – Whenever possible, use freshly ground spices for a more robust and aromatic flavor.
  • Customize Taste – Adjust the quantities of each spice to match your taste preferences. Like it with a more spice blend? Add more chipotle chili powder. Prefer more cumin? Adjust accordingly.
  • Dry – Make sure the spices are completely dry so you won’t have problems with spices sticking into the container. Dry enchilada mix is best for cooking.
  • Experiment – Don’t be afraid to experiment with additional spices like cayenne, more sweet paprika, cumin, or cinnamon for added depth of flavor.
  • Labeling – Label the spice jar with the blend name and date of creation to keep track of its freshness.

How Do I Store Enchilada Spice Mix?

Store the enchilada spice mix in an air-tight container, preferably a glass jar to maintain freshness and prevent moisture from entering.

Place this one flavorful spice blend in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, which can degrade the spices and flavors over time. This way, you will always have a jar on hand.
